SEVA

Seva is the Sanskrit word for selfless service. In Our Purpose it becomes a practice for every stage of life, not something saved for retirement.

Meet the author

Sunil Ishairzay

Author · Founder & President, Earthopia · Purpose Coach · Miami Beach, Florida

For more than 35 years I have worked in business, education and the nonprofit world. I spent the first half of my career building companies: opening Latin American markets for manufacturers in India and China, then leading operations for a global network of call centers that gave work to more than 10,000 young people across India. We built 100 training centers so young people from underprivileged backgrounds could gain the skills to earn a living.

Success taught me a lot. Service taught me more. In 2013 I founded Earthopia, a Washington DC nonprofit providing village-appropriate education in sustainability, to bring 21st-century skills and technology to more than 100,000 single-teacher schools in remote villages of India, with 10,000 team members on the ground. We set up the first “smart village” in Jharkhand with internet, digital learning and solar power, built a teacher training program between India and Afghanistan, and brought Finnish education experts to American classrooms. I have since run child care and learning centers in Washington DC, taught in Miami-Dade public schools, and today help nonprofits and businesses earn more so they can give more.

Along the way I came to see that every stage of my life prepared me for the next, and that the deepest fulfillment came not from what I achieved but from what I gave. That is why I wrote Our Purpose.

My parents gave me roots. My teachers gave me knowledge. My family taught me love. My mentors gave me wisdom. Serving others gave me purpose.
